What Can You Do to Prevent Depression?

Depression affects millions of Americans. 4 of the 10 leading causes of disability in the United States are related to mental health conditions. To minimize your chances of becoming clinically depressed, here are some suggestions for preventing this condition.

  • Exercise – Exercise is good not only for your physical health, but also your mental health. Just 10 minutes of walking can stimulate the release of mood-boosting chemicals. Research from Duke University Medical Center found that regular aerobic exercise worked as well as anti-depressant medication in treating depression.
  • Get Plenty of Sleep – Many of us do not get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can easily lead to depression.
  • Change Your Diet – Eat more foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids as they will help your brain to produce feel-good chemicals..
  • Manage Stress – Our bodies send out signals when we’re overloading on stress and we need to learn to listen to them. Learn how to take a few deep breaths when stress starts creeping up on you. Take a few breaks during the day. Learn how to relax.
  • Go Easy On Yourself – Too many of us are perfectionists and demand too much out of ourselves. Learn how to do the best you can when working on a project or dealing with a problem. Ask yourself if you gave it your best effort and if the answer is yes, learn to live with that.
  • Cultivate Friendships – Everybody needs a social network, friends that you can relax with or use as a buffer against anxiety.

There are a lot of people in the world that suffer from depression, but you don’t have to be one of them. Take care of your body and your mind and you can avoid the pitfalls of depression.
